You want to switch to an e-scooter and are wondering: What kind of driver's license do I need for an electric scooter? To be allowed to ride an e-scooter, you must have a valid driver's license.
In this article, you'll learn about the different driver's license classes, the requirements you need to meet, how motorcycle training works, and the approximate costs. This way, you'll be fully informed and can choose the right driver's license class for you.
Electric scooter license: Which class do you need?
If you want to ride an electric scooter, it's important to know the correct driver's license class. Here's what licenses are relevant for electric scooters and what the minimum age requirements are:
- AM for small motorcycles (mopeds): from 16 years of age. With this license, you can drive our Next NX1 e-scooter , for example.
- A1 for light motorcycles : also from 16 years of age . Ideal for almost any of our electric scooters.
- A2 for motorcycles: From 18 years of age. This license entitles you to drive more powerful models.
- A for motorcycles: With an A license, you can drive almost anything with two or three wheels. To obtain this license, you must either have at least two years of experience with category A2 and be 20 years old, or you can start driving straight away at 24.
- B for motor vehicles (cars): From 18 years of age. With this license, you can drive all e-scooters with the AM requirement.
- B196 extension : From age 25, if you have held a class B driver's license for at least five years. This extension allows you to drive light motorcycles up to 125 cc and a maximum power of 11 kW without an additional test.
This overview will help you quickly determine which driving license you need for your desired electric scooter. This way, you'll be fully informed and can start your electric mobility journey safely and legally.
Difference between electric mopeds (L1e) and light motorcycles (L3e)
Zero Center's electric scooters are divided into two main categories: mopeds (L1e) and light motorcycles (L3e). Depending on the scooter type, a different driver's license is required. Here's an overview to help you understand the difference and determine which license you need:
- Electric moped : These lightweight two-wheeled motor vehicles have a top speed of no more than 45 km/h and a power output of up to 4 kW. To drive these e-scooters, you need a category AM, A1, A2, A, or B driver's license.
- Electric light motorcycle: These two-wheeled motor vehicles have a maximum displacement of 125 cc and an output of up to 11 kW. To drive an electric scooter in the light motorcycle category, you need a class A1, A2, or A driver's license, or the B196 extension. With these requirements, you can drive all of our e-scooters.
With this classification and the corresponding driving licenses, you can be sure that you choose the right electric scooter for your needs and your driving license.
The extension of the B196: Easier from car to e-scooter (light motorcycle)
If you already have a Class B driver's license, it's now easier to drive an electric scooter in the light motorcycle category. Previously, this required at least a Class A1 driver's license. The new B196 extension now offers a straightforward option. After four theory lessons and five 90-minute practical lessons at a driving school, you're done. A test is not required. The B196 extension will be added to your driver's license, and you can drive immediately.
Facts about the B196 extension:
- Required driving license class B (car)
- Minimum period of possession of a Class B driving license: 5 years
- Minimum age: 25 years
- Fee at the driving license office: approx. 29 euros (depending on the respective driving license office)
- Authorization: Driving light motorcycles up to 125 cm³ displacement and 11 kW (15 hp)
- Validity: only in Germany
- Training: At least 4 hours of theory and 5 hours of practice (90 minutes each)
- No test necessary
With the B196 extension, you can quickly and easily switch to a light motorcycle and enjoy the benefits of an electric scooter.
With the B196 extension, even powerful e-scooters like the NX2 from Next can be used on public roads.
